Unit 1: Mythology

Target Skills

1. research strategies & IMC orientation
2. research writing (expository)
3. Modern Language Association formatting for works cited pages and parenthetical documentation
4. understanding and avoiding plagiarism
5. close reading and annotation methods
6. familiarity with classical mythology for recognition of allusions
7. creative presentation skills (use symbolism, use details, eye contact, etc.)
8. develop class procedures for group work
9. analyze literature (symbolism, theme, characterization, poetic and literary devices)
10. write creatively, using a literary model

Additional Skills/Knowledge to be introduced during Unit 1:

1. reinforce the concept of student responsibility in terms of homework assignments and materials checks
2. initiate and maintain silent sustained reading protocol
3. parts of speech: nouns and verbs
4. define literary terminology
5. begin writing portfolio work using 6-traits scoring model
6. complete ACE prompts for NMSBA practice
